Tortas Ahogadas Dany – A Marvelous Culinary Experience

When we told people we were going to Guadalajara for a couple of months, entreaties to make sure to eat tortas ahogadas absolutely flooded in.

We learned that this weird, drowned sandwich is a big deal there. For more info about the culinary delight that is tortas ahogadas – see our “Tortas Ahogadas 101” primer at the end of this article.

Our First Torta Ahogada ~ Celebrating GuadalajaraOur First Ever Torta Ahogada

Taking the advice we received to heart, we ate our first torta ahogada before we even reached the city limits of Guadalajara.

In an unassuming car park at the Plaza de Cobro Plan de Barrancas rest stop between Ixtlán del Río and Santo Tomás and a little over an hour outside of Guadalajara we had our first taste of this local delicacy.

Crunchy, substantial roll smeared with smashed beans, stuffed with perfectly crisp-fatty pork, drowned in a light, tomato broth and then topped with pickled red onions.

Hands and faces glistening with evidence of our first time eating a torta ahogada, we were immediately smitten.

Tortas Ahogadas – Maravillosas!

While in Guadalajara, we ate tortas ahogadas literally all over town. Everyone we met had a favorite spot to recommend for this iconic sandwich and we did our very best to sample them all. At the cart outside our apartment building, via Rappi delivery, even at a local vegan place (tofu standing in for the pork). We were obsessed and couldn’t get enough!

So it’s natural to ask, what was our favorite? That’s an impossible question to answer.

That being said – let me tell you about the phenomenal experience we had at Tortas Ahogadas Dany.

Tortas Ahogadas Dany is an unassuming little food cart on Calle Justo Sierra in the Colonia Americana neighborhood about a  half a block from the Wit Building. Wow! Their torta ahogada packs a punch!

It’s the ideal sandwich combination of tender, well-seasoned pork, bathed in a deep, oregano forward tomato broth, topped with crisp, tangy pickled onions. And the bread roll (we learned it is called a birote)! It is perfect for this sandwich –  holds structure after its bath, but toothsome enough to chew. Not mushy at all.

Beware the chile de arbol sauce – it is WARM. But not too hot, a good balance. Served on the side, so you can titrate your intake.

There are a few tables literally in the street and a small storefront, but they will package the components separately for takeout as well – which is what we did.

Get there early in the day because they do sell out. Would be a shame to have your torta ahogada dreams dashed. (We speak from experience, it took us 2 tries to secure a sandwich. Well worth the wait).

Many thanks to Carlos for making such great food. When we are back in town, we will definitely stop by to pay tribute.

 Torta Ahogada 101

You can’t get more “Guadalajara” then a Torta Ahogada – a spectacular sandwich made with a special bread known as “birote salado”. Birote is a sourdough roll that has dense interior and a thick crunchy crust.

The birote is cut in half and a swipe of refried beans is added. Next comes carnitas and then your sandwich is drenched with an exquisite tomato/chile arbol sauce – Ahogada literally means “drowned” – a Torta Ahogada is a “drowned sandwich”

Your sandwich is then topped with onions – raw or pickled, sliced radishes, and if you like jalapeños and/or hot sauce.

Once you are served your Torta Ahogada your best bet is to eat it immediately while the drenched bread still has a glorious crunch & toothsome chew and is not yet mushy.
